The juniper lamps shown below are from a dead juniper tree hanging precariously from the edge of a cliff. Lloyd edged out with the saw and carefully sawed most of the way through the base, then stood, and bracing himself on nothing, pulled the tree back away from the edge. What a find! A tree that had survived the fierce winds by twisting around on itself makes the beautiful swirls you see in some of the lamps below.
The origin of the burled aspen lamps are somewhat more prosaic, until you consider how aspen gets its burls. Often aspen burls are the scars of violent encounters with lightning, or large animals. Sometimes the burls are the result of a tree being blown over and gashing the aspen or knocking off a branch on the way down. We'll never know how the burls came to be. We can only appreciate their form in the eerie shapes they create that Lloyd lifts so carefully from the dead tree into the shape of the furniture he builds.
